Where I Find My Milky Quartz
Most of my adventures begin along Colorado’s Front Range, just outside the metro Denver area. If you’ve ever wandered those foothills, you know the feeling—rocks everywhere, each one asking to be picked up “just in case.” Milky Quartz is abundant here, but that doesn’t make it any less enchanting. I’m always on the hunt for pieces with those tiny translucent pockets that let the light slip through just enough for the metal behind the stone to glow. Sometimes I find stones with thin, shimmering cracks that catch the sun in the most unexpected ways. I love the pure, crisp whites, but discovering a chunk dusted with soft pink feldspar feels like winning the rockhound lottery.
A Little Colorado Geology
When people think of Colorado rocks, granite usually comes to mind first—and rightly so. Quartz often comes second, and fun fact: sometimes it’s even part of the granite itself. The creamy, opaque white we see in Milky Quartz is caused by gasses, liquids, and tiny bubbles trapped inside the silica as the crystal formed. Most of Colorado’s quartz took shape as magma cooled and silica dioxide crystallized, creating pockets of this gorgeous, cloudlike stone across the state.
Why Milky Quartz Still Feels So Special
Quartz might be the second most common mineral on Earth, but there’s something about Milky Quartz that keeps calling to people. From the stones I see sent in, I know I’m not the only one who feels its pull. “Milky Quartz” is a broad name that covers almost any white quartz you might find on a hike or tucked into gravel along a trail. And for the record—don’t let anyone tell you your Milky Quartz isn’t special. If it caught your eye, if you felt that little spark when you picked it up, then it is special.
From Raw Stone to Waystone
Quartz rates around a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it takes a beautiful shine when polished. Sure, cracks or internal fractures can create challenges during the Waystone crafting process, but they also give each piece a personality of its own. What might have begun as an ordinary stone becomes something ethereal—almost like a drop of cloud or water framed in gold or silver.
Wearing a Piece of the Rockies
When you wear Colorado Milky Quartz, you’re carrying a small piece of mountain morning magic with you. It’s a reminder of crisp alpine air, the hush of pine forests, and the soft white clouds you can only see from the top of a 14er. Strong and resilient—just like you—it pairs effortlessly with any outfit and adds a touch of creamy elegance to your everyday life.
Wear your Milky Quartz in good health. Wear it with joy. And let it bring a bit of the Rockies wherever you go.
