Here at Waystone, we take customers' meaningful stones and turn them into keepsake jewelry and accessories. The question we hear most frequently is, "what happens to what's left of my stone after you cut it?"
What We Do With Your Rock
When we start working with your stone, typically the first step is to cut it in half, and then slice off slabs that can be used to make your jewelry and accessories.
When working with small rocks, we often need every bit of material to properly craft your keepsake; at least 1/16" extra material on all sides compared to the size of the jewelry you're ordering. You can use our printable Stone Size Guide to compare your rock to Waystone jewelry sizes.
When we get a larger rock, we may need only a small slice off one side, leaving most of the rock intact. So what happens to that remnant? It's a good question!
Fear not—we would never throw your special stone away, or use it to make jewelry for someone else. The remainder of the rock is sent back to you, unless you choose to store it with us to make more matching jewelry in the future.
Pair Your Keepsake With a Stone Display Piece
If you have a stone that's large enough, you'll get a piece back after we make your keepsake. If you choose, we can polish the cut surface of that remaining stone so you have a display piece to keep on a shelf, desk, or bedside table. How big the display piece will be depends on the keepsakes you ordered; we've polished remnants as small as 1" across with beautiful results.
Polishing one side of your display piece brings out the color of your rock and makes its patterns even more striking. You may also be surprised by what we find inside! A stone you've been holding on to for years can hold secrets you've never seen, but we'll uncover them after cutting it with our slab saw.
We've found all sorts of interesting things inside rocks, including fossils and quartz deposits. Most often, we're surprised by colors and patterns that weren't visible from the outside at all. How to Order a Stone Display Piece
To turn the remainder of your rock into a polished display piece, check the box in the personalization options while ordering your Bring Your Own Stone keepsake to tell us that you'd like us to polish the cut remnant. For a $20 fee, we'll give the cut face of your remaining stone a beautiful shine and grind down any sharp edges so it's display-ready.
